Exfoliation

When people tell me their skin concern, the usual solution is EXFOLIATION. I say that so often that clients laugh and ask if it’s my only answer. It isn’t, but it usually is the answer to your skin issue!

The best way to make your makeup smoother

The best way to brighten dark spots and discoloration

The best way to help even out skin texture

The best way to clean out enlarged follicles (pores)

The best way to remove dead dry flakiness

The best to renew and start over the cellular turnover rate (CTR): Means the time period it takes for the new skin cells to reach the top of the skin which is what we see. Usually takes 30 days for the process. This is why products will take between a month to 6 months to see results depending on your CTR and other factors.)

In order to understand the importance of exfoliation, I should probably explain the layers of skin.

The visible layer of skin is the stratum corneum. Under a magnifying glass you can see the flak like appearance. Those small flakes are dead skin cells who have worked their way up the layers and progressively aged and dehydrated. The best solution to keeping your skin look softer and smoother is removing those dead skin cells and replenishing the skin with moisture and nutrients. And above all protecting the skin with Sun Protection since it is now more delicate. The sun can turn exfoliated skin into aged skin quickly when abused. Wearing SPF after can prevent sun spots, age spots, broken down collagen and elastin.

Leenie's tips

Think of Exfoliation as a gentle at home Face Peel. Exfoliation can range from wiping your face with a towel to using a scrub with beads to chemicals like AHA or BHA.

You can use a gentle daily exfoliation almost everyday to using a strong one twice a week. Depending on your skin type and the product will determine your usage. ALWAYS READ DIRECTIONS. It is recommended that way from years of testing, trials, and plenty of lawsuits. Probably best to listen to the professional, or in that case the product.

Don’t be afraid to try. Companies like Sephora thrive on is finding the right product for the right person. They sample. Dont be shy. Its a great way to find what doesn’t give you an allergic reaction, or isn’t too aggressive for your skin type. Sensitive skin types might stay away from salt or sugar exfoliators. Oily skin loves more agressive exfoliation. Acne spreads with some exofoliators.

Yerba Mate

Making Yerba Mate from leaves in my yard.

Yerba Mate (YER-BAH MAT-TAY) is Argentina’s favorite drink. This tea contains 90% antioxidants, more than green tea. Aids digestion. Caffeine without the jitters. Improves mood. Enhances your ability to focus. Physical endurance. Reduces inflammation. Detoxifies blood. Prevents many types of cancer. And is a huge social tradition in most parts of South America. This has been my favorite drink since I was a little girl in Córdoba. Below are some of the many ways to enjoy Yerba Mate. My personal favorite is in the picture below with the loose leafs and the traditional Mate gourd. It enhances the flavor as well as the concentration. Also incredible with milk and sugar. Gosh it takes me back.

How to make Yerba Mate Tea:

Bring the water or milk to simmer. DON’T BOIL.

Measure about 1 tsp per cup. Add more to make it stronger.

Seep 3-5 minutes.

I love using my Keurig to heat up the water and place my loose leaves in a tea strainer. I get my tea strainers from the Dollar Tree or Daiso. I like adding sugar accordingly. Sometimes my tastebuds prefer sweeter, sometimes more bitter, you can add more leaves to make it stronger.

Have it hot or over ice.

Optional add-ins

  • Milk or milk alternative
  • Sugar
  • Mint * Delicious! AND digests even smoother.
  • Lemon
  • Te De Burro

HAIR 101

IMG_0150Hair on your body lasts for weeks. The hair on your head is there for years. The 3 stages of hair growth starts with the anagen phase, it will determine the length of your hair. Hair that is removed from the anagen stage is more effective for long term hair reduction.

The pilosebaceous unit consists of:

  • The Root,
  • Bulb,
  • Papilla,
  • It’s appendages, arrector pili muscle, and the sebaceous gland.

Fun fact: The face has 3,200 follicles per square inch! The hair on your head grows half an inch per month (on average).

Get your hair trimmed every few weeks to help it grow and start over in its phases.

IMG_6108Lash aftercare tips:

  • No touching, water, steam, or sweat today & tomorrow.
  • Avoid oil based & waterproof products around lashes.
  • Do not rub or pull lashes.
  • Do not use a curler.
  • Do not sleep on your face.
  • Groom lashes with disposable wand or use the cool setting on your blow dryer to fan into place.
  • Maintain your extensions with 2 week touch up appointments.

Don’t worry when you lose an extension. Each extension will fall out with its natural lash during its normal growth cycle. Anywhere between 2-4 lashes per day is considered normal.
